Youre not really going to find equipment that meets what you just described. Alien Bees, Elinchrome Ranger, Dyna Lite are all some of the lower end equipment that will give you great photos. You are probably better off buying hotlights, which you can jury rig from Amazon and use diffusers and distance as your power adjustment.

What photography equipment do I need for some product photos?
I’m new to digital photography, and especially new to dealing with lighting. I’m looking to buy a light kit and I have no clue what brands or set-ups I should be looking for. I do have to keep a budget in mind, but it’s a little flexible. I have the camera and the editing software taken care of, but I need some direction for the other stuff….

The reason why the field camera was recommended was for it’s tilt and shift capabilities, or it’s ability to focus on a subject while keeping the film plane perpendicular to the product. Thanks to modern lens design, you can find a tilt shift lens by most of the major manufacturers, but they are expensive for an amateur or casual user.
Bare minimum, i’d say a white seemless background , two equally powered lights set 45° to your subject, and a camera with decent resolution on a tripod squared to your subject.
To build on that, I’d also incorporate a light tent to provide more even illumination if you had small products.
Building even further, I’d add a DSLR with a tilt shift lens or a macro lens for those tiny pieces like watches or jewelry.
The combinations are endless and dependent upon the size and nature of the product.

I’m a single mom of 2. I’m 25. I don’t recieve welfare & I work full time. I have finally decided to go to school for photography. I’m a photographer & manager for a studio (JCPenney) I have a great talent & I love what I do.. the school I want to go to is the New England School of Photography in Boston. It’s a 2 yr cert. program & tutition is $17,000 yr. I have applied for federal grants & stafford loan. I have been approved for $11,000 in total. The problem is I still need to make up the difference + I still need supplies camera, film, paper, laptop etc… ($7,500) Plus a monthly T pass for the train @ $223.
As a single mom I don’t have this kind of money. I don’t have the best credit as well and any kind of loan would need a co-signer. I don’t have any family that can sign for me & I’m feeling that my dreams are starting to fall apart. I don’t know what else I can do. If anyone has suggestions I will listen….

A degree always looks good on a resume when applying for jobs, but consider this. A lot of the really great photographers never went to photo school– Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Annie Leibowitz. They were self-taught. I am also primarily self-taught. I’m in some photo classes at my local junior college. It just so happens that they have a really good program and the state of Florida pays for most of my costs except for cameras and supplies of course. I considered for a long time whether taking classes would be worth my time or not. I’ve learned a lot, sure. But most of the basics I learned from reading and experimenting a whole lot. I started shooting weddings and portraits before I even went to school.
I guess it depends on what you want to do as a photographer. You have to decide whether the investment of going to school is the best route to break into being a professional. I was reading an article in Photo District News about the “Top New Young Photographers” or something along those lines recently. Most of them graduated from an art or photography program, but they didn’t really get their big breaks until they were in their late 20’s to mid-30’s. Think about your long term goals and decide which short term goals are necessary and feasible right now. This is all just my opinion, but I hope it helps.

what are my chances of successfully contesting a parking ticket in SF?
We were parked at a meter, IN the car, and it was pouring rain. The parking lady drove by us with lights flashing, and did not stop. We were dutifully putting money in the meter so that it never expired. We were never handed an initial ticket, but received a citation by mail later. Unfortunately, there is no photo evidence, but three people were sitting IN the car with the meter running when the parking&transportation vehicle passed us by.
